A member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the ObiDient movement, Dickson Iroegbu, has blamed the renewed impeachment moves against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, on what he described as the ruling All Progressives Congress’ empowerment of political overreach, warning that the crisis threatens democratic stability.

Speaking in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Friday, Iroegbu said the sudden recall of the Rivers State House of Assembly from recess to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara was neither accidental nor independent.

“Of course, Charles, the sudden coming back of the State Assembly from their recess, the only mission they had was clear: to come for that impeachment notice,” he said.

He argued that the language and posture of the Assembly leadership mirrored that of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, suggesting external orchestration.

“Even the language of the Speaker, you could hear him re-echoing the language of the FCT Minister — that Sim Fubara is a mistake. He kept saying that. So you could clearly see that it was a Nyesom Wike action, acted by those that are his stooges.”

Despite his criticism, Iroegbu said he held no sympathy for either side in the political standoff.

“The truth is that I have no tears for both camps. I have no tears for Sim Fubara. I have no pity either for Nyesom Wike, who is now biting more than he can chew,” he said.

He also extended blame to political actors who, in his view, enabled Wike’s rise to national prominence.

“I also have no pity for the people who created the monster that we now know today as Nyesom Wike, because the truth of the matter is that the APC, through the enabling of the President, gave him the platform which he has now used to almost scuttle democracy in our country.”

Iroegbu accused the ruling party of deliberately positioning Wike to destabilise the opposition PDP.

“They positioned him to wreck, to destroy, to undermine, to possibly annihilate the Peoples Democratic Party. And having almost succeeded with that, he now thinks himself bigger than possibly even the President.”

He argued that Wike’s recent rhetoric and political conduct suggested a belief that he wielded unchecked influence in Rivers State.

“If you listened to some of the platforms the Minister appeared on, some of the meetings he had with supporters in Rivers, you would hear him say nobody — he didn’t exempt anybody — nobody can decide what happens in Rivers.”

According to Iroegbu, the ongoing confrontation between Wike and Fubara could ultimately expose deeper political contradictions within the ruling party.

“What they have created is now about to eat all of them up,” he said.

Calling on President Bola Tinubu to act decisively, Iroegbu urged the President to reassert constitutional authority.

“I hope the President will have the boldness to sack Nyesom Wike and make him realise that there is only one President and Commander-in-Chief.”

He further claimed that Wike had already outlived his usefulness to the ruling party.

“The President has thrown Nyesom Wike under the bus. He has served whatever purpose it is. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t succeed.”

On the wider political implications, Iroegbu said the crisis presented opportunities for the opposition, particularly the PDP.

“For us in the PDP, this Roforofo fight that is going on — we pray it continues so that we can have the space to engage further and help salvage our country.”

He expressed confidence that the fallout could ultimately strengthen the opposition’s position in Rivers State.

“Yes, of course, it will favour the opposition party, particularly the PDP, by the time all of this is settled.” (AriseNews TV)
