The 2025 Abia International Film Festival, slated for December 19-20, at Cine 21, Aba, the commercial hub of the state, has received 1,243 film submissions from 155 countries, an indication that Abia state is becoming a shining star in the global creative landscape, Alexander Elekwa, president, Abia Film Festival, has stated.
Elekwa, in an interview with BusinessDay, said that the festival activities, will include a grand opening ceremony to welcome the world to Abia state, inspirational film screening, intensive workshop and master class, panel discussion with industry experts and Abia Nollywood Artists Night Award to celebrate excellence.
Elekwa, while praising Governor Alex Otti for his unvavering support, endorsement and commitment to the creative industry, noted that the Governor has created the enabling environment that allows festivals like ABIFF to thrive.
Thus is as he also acknowledged the outstanding contributions of Matthew Ekwuribe, the state’s commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Matilda Anyamele, senior special assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Arts, Culture and Creative Economy and Martins Okey Justice, senior special assistant to the Governor on Tourism and Entertainment for their passion, collaboration and continued support towards the growth of creative initiatives.
Elekwa, who is excited with the number of film submissions, affirmed that his dream is to make ABIFF bigger and border.
According to him, “We envision a festival that expands it’s global reach, attracts more international collaborations, strengthen local capacity and reate sustainable opportunities for our youth.
“We are committed to making ABIFF, not just a festival, but a permanent creative hub, where ideas are nurtured , skills are developed and dreams are transformed into teal careers.”
He said that one of the most important priorities of the organisation is the training and empowerment of Abia youths, who are passionate about media, film and creative arts, stressing that the future if the industry lies in the hands of young people.
Kate Ezigbo, president, Nigeria Film Festival Association (NFFA), said that films were submitted from different parts of the world, an indication that ABIFF has put Abia on global map.
She noted that film festivals expose local films to the world and appealed to stakeholders in the film industry in Nigeria, especially those in the South-East and South-South regions to support ABIFF. (BusinessDay)
