The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) says suspected drug barons attacked its operatives and that of the Nigerian Army in Ukpuje, in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo.

Mr. Mitchel Ofoyeju, Edo Commander of the NDLEA, said this in a statement on Monday in Benin.

Ofoyeju said the incident occurred in the early hours of Oct. 27 when the operatives attempted to dismantle cannabis farms in the area.

According to him, the officers were allegedly ambushed by armed cultivators who opened fire in an attempt to repel the operation.

He said the team engaged the attackers briefly before making a tactical withdrawal to avoid further casualties.

“As our team advanced into Ukpuje, they came under heavy attack from drug cultivators and traffickers in the community.

“The officers responded professionally and managed to retreat safely after the situation became hostile,” the commander explained.

He confirmed that one officer sustained injuries after being struck by a sharp object during the attack but has since received medical attention and was now in stable condition.

“We are thankful that no live was lost. The injured officer has been treated and is recovering.

“This development, however, will not deter us from our mission to rid Edo State of illicit drug activities,” Ofoyeju stated.

The NDLEA boss noted that the Ukpuje operation formed part of the agency’s broader anti-narcotics strategy to combat cannabis cultivation and trafficking in Edo, which remained one of Nigeria’s leading drug production hubs.

“We will continue to intensify operations in drug-prone areas like Ukpuje and ensure that those behind these criminal networks are brought to justice.

“The NDLEA, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, is committed to restoring safety and order,” Ofoyeju said.

He also appealed to community leaders and residents to support the agency by providing intelligence that could help in identifying and apprehending those involved in illicit drug cultivation and trafficking.

“Community cooperation is key. Together, we can build a safer, drug-free Edo State,” Ofoyeju added. (NAN)
