Sokoto State has been thrown into mourning following a tragic boat accident that claimed several lives at Kojiyo Ward in Goronyo Local Government Area on Sunday.
The ill-fated boat, which was conveying dozens of passengers across the river, reportedly capsized midway, resulting in multiple casualties and loss of property.
A source who simply identified himself as Abubakar said many passengers drowned, while others are still missing as search and rescue operations continue.
“This is indeed a great tragedy for our community,” a resident told our correspondent, describing the atmosphere in Kojiyo as tense and sorrowful.
Authorities have assured all that further updates will be made available as rescue efforts intensify.
The Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday.
SEMA, under the leadership of its Special Adviser, Hon. Aminu Liman Bodinga, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured them that the state government is working closely with emergency responders to intensify rescue efforts.
“The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with relevant agencies, has deployed response teams to enhance ongoing search operations.
“We urge community members to adhere strictly to safety regulations and avoid overloading boats,” the statement added.
The agency further pledged to strengthen safety awareness campaigns and work with stakeholders to enforce inland waterways regulations aimed at preventing future tragedies. (The PUNCH)
