The Kano State Hisbah Board has dissolved the marriage of two young love ‘birds’ who tied the knot without their parents consent.
The couple, identified as Aliyu Mukhtar and Fatima, both residents of Yakasai area in Kano reportedly conducted their wedding ceremony in secret after their families refused to allow their marriage.
According to the 22-year-old groom Aliyu, he decided to proceed with the marriage after his father refused to grant permission; “When I told him I wanted to marry her, he said I was too young and he won’t allow it”
On the part of the teenage bride, her family objected to the relationship because he is still in her final year of secondary school.
Left with no support, the couple chose to formalize their union without notifying their relatives or guardians. Their friends acted as their guardians and the Nikkah was quickly conducted.
Their decision triggered a backlash from their families, who petitioned the Hisbah Board to intervene and investigate how the youths were able to marry without parental consent.
The Hisbah Board concluded that while the marriage did not contravene any existing laws or religious injunctions outright, it nonetheless lacked the necessary consent from both families, an element considered vital under local customs and Islamic marital practices. Therefore, the marriage has been annulled with immediate effect.
As at the time of filing this report, neither Aliyu nor Fatima had publicly commented on the dissolution of their marriage. (Daily Post)
