Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Abia State Chaka Chukwumerije
Commissioner for Lands and Housing in Abia State Chaka Chukwumerije has narrowly escaped death.
The incident, our correspondent gathered, happened at the weekend when gunmen opened fire on his vehicle on the Okigwe axis of Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway.
He was said to be heading to Umuahia, the state capital when a vehicle that had been trailing them suddenly opened fire on them.
It was gathered despite the series of bullets fired at them, he and three others in the car miraculously escaped unhurt, although their vehicle was badly riddled with bullets, leaving holes on the car.
His brother Dike Chukwumerije, who shared the terrifying experience, described it as a deliberate attempt on the Commissioner’s life, pointing out his unwavering dedication to public service and his long-standing loyalty to Governor Otti’s vision for a new Abia.
“Chaka has buried himself in his work. He’s been selfless, focused, and fully aligned with the reform-driven government of Alex Otti,” he began.
“Unfortunately, it is often people like him—committed to doing the right thing—who face the greatest threats in our system.”
The family expressed gratitude to God for sparing the Commissioner’s life and emphasized that despite the dangers, they remain committed to serving the state with integrity and courage.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Maureen Chinaka promised to get back to our correspondent.
However, a source in the command said that the incident didn’t happen within the Abia Command’s territory. (The Nation: Text, Excluding Headline)
