Mr. Wasiu Adesina, Chairman of Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State, says he will provide free transport for residents wishing to go to INEC for their Permanent Voters Card (PVC).
The chairman made the pledge at an empowerment programme on Tuesday, organised by the council for some women in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) scheduled the council poll for July 12.
NAN also reports that the PVCs are domiciled with the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Adesina said that the vehicles are for those who had not collected the PVCs and are willing to vote in the election.
He said that local government election is very critical because it would decide who takes care of the needs of the people at the grassroots.
The chairman urged residents to ensure they fully participated in the election.
Adesina, however, empowered 20 women with N50,000 cash gift each to help improve their economic status.
NAN reports that the 20 women were selected across the wards of the council for the event which held at the council secretariat.
Adesina said he believed that the best way to serve the people was by investing in their lives.
“Providing access to initiatives such as this, we are not merely giving our people fish, we are teaching them how to fish,” Adesina said.
He emphasised his commitment to ensuring every member of his constituency had a taste of dividends of democracy.
The chairman promised that all ongoing projects would be completed and inaugurated before the end of his tenure.
He expressed gratitude to management team of the council, the members of staff and heads of departments for their unflinching loyalty and support.
Alhaja Rashidat Bello, the APC Ikorodu Division woman leader, urged the beneficiaries to ensure they used the cash gift judiciously.
She commended the council chairman for his kindness, generosity as well as efforts in supporting women through his continuous empowerment programmes.
“This gift is an important seed to start up a business and help alleviate the suffering of the beneficiaries,” she said.
Mrs. Shokunbi Karimot, one of the beneficiaries commended APC and the chairman for selecting them and prayed for more elevation in his political career. (NAN)
