In a statement shared with Vanguard on Friday, Engr. Nnaemeka Humphrey Nwosu confirmed that Prof. Nwosu died on October 20, 2024, following a brief illness.
The statement describes Prof. Nwosu, aged 83, as a dedicated advocate for democracy, a respected scholar of political science and public administration, and a statesman who left a lasting impact on Nigeria?s political landscape.
?With a profound sense of sadness and deep grief, the family of distinguished Professor Humphrey Nwosu announces his death,? read the family statement. ?He served as Chairman of Nigeria?s National Electoral Commission from 1989 to 1993 and remains a hero to millions for his pivotal role in laying the democratic foundation of the country.?
Prof. Nwosu?s leadership of NEC included the historic June 12, 1993, presidential election, widely regarded as Nigeria?s fairest and most credible election, which laid important groundwork for Nigeria?s democracy.
His distinguished academic career included degrees in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the University of California, Berkeley, where he achieved First Class Honors and Magna Cum Laude distinctions. His publications, including Laying the Foundation for Nigeria?s Democracy: My Account of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election and its Annulment, contributed to Nigeria?s political scholarship.
The statement honors him not only as a dedicated family man, loving husband, father, and grandfather but also as a generous community leader. Known as ??ka ome? in his hometown, Ajalli, Anambra State, he was celebrated for his philanthropy and community development efforts.
Prof. Nwosu is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mrs. Stella Nwosu, their four children, six grandchildren, and extended family. Funeral arrangements will be announced soon. (Vanguard)
