By SHEDRACK FRANK
Ogboinbiri FC emerged as the winner of the 2024 Bayelsa Governors Cup, also known as the Prosperity Cup, on Saturday.
The final match, held at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, saw the Bekewei brothers steal the show as Ogboinbiri FC defeated Nembe FC 3-0.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match started cautiously with both sides sizing each other up.
It became electrifying in the 22nd minute when Bekewei Ebis amazing footwork and cross from the by-line found his brother Bekewei Paul, who headed home to give Ogboinbiri the lead.
Nembe FC pushed hard for an equalizer before half-time, but a defensive mix-up led to Ebi slotting the ball past the Nembe FC goalkeeper, giving Ogboinbiri FC a 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Nembe FC began with renewed determination, seeking a comeback goal, while Ogboinbiri protected their 2-0 lead.
Ogboinbiri FC extended their lead to 3-0 in the 55th minute after Nembe FC defenders failed to clear their lines, with Paul scoring his second goal of the day.
With a comfortable three-goal lead, Ogboinbiri FC managed to defend the remaining minutes of the game, clinching the title for the first time for the team from Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa.
Earlier in the female category, NDU Queens FC defeated Peremo Soccer Academy 1-0 thanks to Osiga Glorias early strike in the 2nd minute, securing the university girls their first-ever Prosperity Cup title. (NAN)
