Minister of women affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye
Minister of women affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye has said there is a court injunction has been issued to stop the proposed mass wedding of 100 orphaned girls in Niger State.
She made this known while speaking to journalists at the distribution of the first phase of free 1,000 Units of Point Of Sales, (POS), machines among some women in the FCT as a pilot scheme of projected distribution of 37,000 Units across the 36 States and the FCT, Thursday in Abuja
The minister said 1,0000 women have signed a petition against the said planned marriage as a solidarity to the federal government’s move to stop the mass wedding.
Although the minister did not specify which court granted the injunction, she however, said there is now a legal backlash to the federal government’s move to stop the act as it violated the rights of the girls, especially those underage.
Niger State House Assembly Speaker, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, had said that he will be marrying off the girls as part of his constituency project and as a way of alleviating poverty.
The girls became orphaned as a result of attacks by bandits in Mairiga Local Government Area, (LGA), under his constituency and are about to be married off to solve the challenge of their upkeep. (The Guardian)
