Sinn Féins Michelle ONeill, who will make history as the first leader of Northern Ireland who supports an end to British control of the region and the reunification of Ireland, has hailed a historic day as devolved government returns.

This is a historic day, the incoming first minister posted on the social network X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday morning.

It is about the future. It is about working together to deliver for workers and families and creating new and exciting opportunities that ensure our children and grandchildren can achieve their dreams and ambitions in life.

As a first minister for all, I am determined to lead positive change for everyone, and to work together with others to progress our society in a spirit of respect, cooperation, and equality, he added.

Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are expected to gather at Parliament Buildings at Stormont on the outskirts of Belfast later Saturday for a sitting at which a series of ministers will be appointed to a powersharing executive, bringing an end to a two-year political impasse.
