This may not be the best of times for the staff of Visafone Communications Limited, one of the major players in the CDMA sub-sector of the Nigerian telecommunications industry; imminent sack is looming in the once vibrant telecommunications outfit, News Express can report this morning.
An inside source hinted News Express that a good number of staff may soon be shown the way out owing to the challenges confronting the industry especially the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Sector) market which has seen most of the players close shop in recent times.
The source who would not want to be named for fear of victimisation averred that the re-organisation exercise being undertaken by the management is designed to whittle down the work force.
“Some of us at Visafone knew that it was going to come to this, because the sign had been evident a long time ago. So when the said re-organisation started some staff who were not comfortable simply dropped their resignation. But I must tell you that more people are going,” the source said.
More than 60 staff were said to have been relieved of their jobs last month, although the management said it was untrue.
When News Express visited the corporate head office of the telco on Victoria Island, Lagos, an air of apprehension enveloped the once vibrant and busy office. Easily noticeable were empty cubicles which in the past were manned by staff.
When contacted on phone to get the company’s position on the matter, Mr. Joseph Ushighale, Head, Corporate Communications, told News Express that the company was restructuring and not sacking any staff, noting that restructuring does not mean sack.
