There is a total lockdown in Sapele, Delta State as gunmen killed two members of the local Vigilantes group in last night. The development has resulted in the blockage of major streets at Amukpe and burning of tyres on tarred road by an angry mob in protest of the continued insecurity in town.

Eyewitness had it that a Venza car intercepted the Hilux van of the local vigilantes at the Amukpe Motor park area and started shooting the occupants of the Hilux Van.

The Hilux, in an attempt to evade the gun fire, tried to escape but rather ran into the pole of one of the street lights along the road.

It was said that the gunmen drove to where the Hilux Van was stuck and sprayed the occupants with more bullets, killing the Amukpe vigilantes Chairman, name Glory and the other occupant, identified as Gift.

Another witness said the Venza car was among the group that invaded community road and NDDC road the previous night, to rob residents.

The eyewitness that pleaded anonymity said it may be that while they were escaping from the robbery, they met the vigilante and attacked them.

As at the time of filing this report, vehicular movement around Amukpe has stopped as an angry mob blocked the road, setting bonfire on the tarred road, in protest of the continued insecurity in the town despite the visit of the Commissioner of Police to Sapele to address this issue early this week.

Speaking with the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Eugene Okpe Inoaghan, on phone, he said the culprits will definitely be brought to book and assured residents that the Police will soon restore order in the troubled areas. (Delta State News Bulletin)
