Governor Soludo
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
Some pensioners in Anambra State have called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct theSstate Accountant-General to implement the law on harmonization of pension, saying that pension should be harmonized anytime a new minimum wage was introduced and/or reviewed every five years.
The pensioners lamented the disparity in their monthly pensions, urging the Governor to correct the anomaly.
While describing their monthly pensions as agonizing, the pensioners alleged that a retired Permanent Secretary in the state before 2011 received as low as N50, 000 per month.
They stressed that pensioners in the state who retired before May 2011 minimum wage implementation were receiving what they described as peanuts, compared to the pensions of their counterparts who retired after the said date.
They said: “The state leadership of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP)has, for years, been fighting for the harmonization, but without success.
A retired Deputy Director in the state civil service, Mr. Polycarp Onwubiko, who said he was affected by the disparity, made a passionate appeal to Governor Soludo to give ear to the over 10 years cry of the affected pensioners.
