Which of the legacy parties within APC should produce the presidential candidate for 2023? By Prof. Echefuna’ R. G. Onyebeadi

APC chieftain, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu

Who will be presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has become a major issue in recent times. Interestingly, notable aspirants, including political jobbers and jesters in APC, have been declaring their intentions to occupy the high office of the President come 2023?

APC was a 2014 merger of some existing political parties referred to as the legacy parties, namely (not in any particular order): ANPP, CPC, ACN, a faction of APGA and a faction of PDP known as nPDP.

Since Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu published his book on how APC came to be years ago, to which he, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, played a very prominent role and to which President Muhammadu Buhari was the Chief Book Launcher, there hasn't been a single contrary opinion on the content of the said book to date!

Both CPC and ACN would have had their turn in the APC Presidency for eight uninterrupted years by 2023 in Major-General Muhammadu Buhari Rtd (North West) and Professor Yemi Osinbajo (South West).

The nPDP component of APC has taken over the party at the national level by producing the National Chairman in Senator Abdullahi Adamu (North Central) and National Secretary in Senator Iyiola Omisore (South West), following the APC's recent national convention; while the ACN/CPC components in APC had also produced the National Chairman of the party thrice since 2015 in Chief Niyi Akande (South West), Chief Odigie Oyegun (South South) and Comrade ADAMS Oshiomole (South South) and National Caretaker Chairman for two years in Mai Mala Buni (North East).

Key positions in APC and government since 2015 to date have been occupied mainly by the CPC, ACN and other components safe for the ANPP component of the APC.

So far, only the ANPP component which is a major stakeholder in APC, to which Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was the alter ego and National Chairman, is yet to have any turn in both the leadership of APC and government since 2015 when the APC came to power.

So, come 2023, wouldn’t it be expedient for APC to cede the position of President to the ANPP component of APC to which Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu was the alter ego and National Chairman? Just thinking aloud as a neutral observer!....
