I have just learned of the sad demise of Chief Guy I. Ikokwu, Omenife Oba.

Departing at 85 may seem a decent run for a human being on earth, but frankly, the society would have been better served if a personality like Chief Ikokwu had lived much longer. At least, he ought to have been around to help guide us through these our most uncertain and trying times.

From my occasional, but intense, interaction with Chief Ikokwu I found he was an engaging and active mind; an intellectual giant and a passionate advocate of any cause in which he believed. He was a fierce adversary to confront but a decent and fair minded one. He was the archetypal Uncle to those who needed mentoring and I’m certain many of us are mourning his passing.

We have lost a great personality and a noble mind. Our society had lost a great sounding board, an altruistic, trusted and dependable voice.

The trail of the light he cast during his sojourn on earth will, for a long time, illuminate the way and will, guide and inspire many.

Goodnight Omenife. We will miss you, but we take solace in the fact that you showed us how to live – with conviction, courage and public service.
