Anambra JUSUN suspends strike

Anambra State Chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) has called off the strike action it embarked on Monday, thus giving a sigh of relief to litigants in the state as well as the politicians who are pursuing their cases at the tribunal.

State chairman of JUSUN, Comrade Mark Ifezue, said the call off was based on the positive response of the state government yesterday. He however did not give details.

Many people were delighted to see the gates of the courts open for business while the staff members arrived early to resume their duty.

Information reaching News Express has it that Governor Willie Obiano intervened in the matter and has also promised state government’s intervention to meet the demands of the JUSUN members.

Meanwhile, the Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, is scheduled to begin a visitation of the three prisons in the state on Monday June 1.

A statement signed by the chief registrar of the state judiciary, Mrs. Doris Ezeani said it was in exercise of the powers vested in him as the chief judge of the state.

According to her, prison officials and other stakeholders have been put on notice to ensure the success of the three-day exercise.

Details showed that the visit would kick off with a visit to Onitsha Prisons, while the Aguata and Awka Prisons would follow on June 3 and June 5 respectively.

The Registrar explained that priority for release would be given to inmates on the basis of old age, health grounds, juveniles and those who had stayed longer than their sentences would have lasted if their cases had been decided.

She noted that inmates who could engage the services of lawyers to present their cases during the visits would have better opportunities to have their cases heard.
