A bad portion of Onitsha Enugu road
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
The Anambra State House of Assembly has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene over the abandonment of reconstruction work on the Onitsha – Enugu Expressway.
The lawmakers lamented that the road reconstruction being done by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Works has been abandoned.
The call was contained in a resolution passed on Friday describing the abandoned project as a discomfort to road users.
“We urge the Federal Government to direct the construction firm handling the contract to go back to site to alleviate the sufferings of the road users.
The expressway is an important trunk – a highway, known for its heavy vehicular traffic. It was abandoned and became dilapidated for several years and left the users of the deplorable road in grief.
“Contract to reconstruct Anambra State section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway was awarded to RCC in November 2018 with a completion period of 42 months," the resolution read.
The lawmakers expressed worry that despite the lifting of the lockdown and interstate border closures several weeks ago, the contractor was yet to return to site.
The resolution came barely 48 hours after some traditional rulers in the state that visited the Presidential Villa, hailed the President Buhari for his infrastructural development of the South-East region in general and Anambra State in particular.
The royal fathers had listed Buhari’s landmark projects in the zone to include the Second Niger Bridge, the Enugu – Onitsha Expressway, and Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, etc.
