Africans forcibly quarantined in China
By CHARLES IWUOHA
A socio-political pressure group, Opportunity is Given International (OGI), has decried the dehumanising treatment being meted on Nigerian nationals in China this few days.
Nigerian embassy officials in China were seen in a recent video that has gone viral confronting a Chinese official over issues of additional 14 days isolation for Nigerians when they had been confirmed Coronavirus negative.
They were also accused of forcing Nigerians to relocate to a new place for the additional isolation period and seizing of Nigerian passports without notification of the Nigerian Embassy in China.
The South-East Coordinator of the group, Dr Chimbo Obieze, told newsmen in Enugu on Saturday that all sorts of stigmatisation and inhuman treatment on Nigerians in China, under the guise of checking Coronavirus spread, must be stopped.
Obieze said that no nation under the sun would accept its national being treated without any iota of human dignity as the Chinese allegedly using sticks to chase Nigerians out of their hotel rooms and living apartments in the country.
According to him, Chinese nationals move freely in Nigeria and they are given the best human treatment in terms of security and association.
“To say the least, no responsible country will allow its nationals to be treatment with such disrespect without demanding an immediate apology as well as taking appropriate diplomatic action as well.
“The notion of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) that Nigerians should merely report grievances to the embassy and it end there, is not acceptable to any right thinking Nigerian.
“The Chinese government should give a full explanation to what is happening and an unreserved apology to Nigeria especially to President Muhammadu Buhari.
“While the Nigerian government should set-up a committee to ensure the safety of all Nigerians and those that are tired of further staying in China should return home to reunite with their families in Nigeria,” Obieze said.
He also urged the Federal Government to ensure that the monetary palliatives meant for the poorest of the poor get to every state of the federation, adding that each state had its fair share of indigent families.
“The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs should do more by ensure that the palliatives gets to all nooks and crannies of the country and no state is left out as the poverty rate is well scattered throughout the country,” he said.
