Gunmen abduct Nsukka town president

Suspected gunmen, during the weekend, abducted the President General of Nsukka Town Union, Chief Augustine Alumona.

The abductors were said to have taken him through the newly constructed Opi - Ugwogo Nike Road, but to no known destination.

A source said that a police officer, who was returning from night duty spotted Alumona’s vehicle where it was abandoned.

“Sensing abnormality in the way the vehicle was parked, he opened it and saw the phone number of one Mr. Moses Ugwu, whom he called and he confirmed that Alumona is his brother from Echara community in Nsukka Local Government area,’’ the source said.

Reacting to the development, the Secretary General of Oha Nsukka Assembly, Dr. Ikechukwu Obayi, said the abduction of Chief Alumona was shocking and unbelievable.

He said: “The wife called me and broke the news of the abduction of her husband along Opi - Ugwuogo Nike Road.

“Going by the peaceful nature of Chief Alumona in conducting the affairs of Nsukka community, he should be the least person anyone would think of ambushing or kidnapping.”

Obayi stressed that the matter had been reported to the Enugu State Police Command for quick rescue of their community leader.

When contacted for comment, the Nsukka Area Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Musa Haladu, confirmed the incident but said it was within the jurisdiction of the Enugu State command.

He assured that the police would soon unravel the circumstance surrounding the kidnap of Alumona.

As at the time of filling this report, no ransom has been demanded on the victim by the suspected kidnappers.

A source told our correspondent that the victim was on his way to the Enugu residence of a PDP gubernatorial aspirant and Managing Director of Peace Mass Transit, Evangelist Samuel Maduka Onyishi, for a meeting before he was whisked away by the hoodlums.
