Kaduna Police Commands Armament Officer, DSP Nanbol Audu, who was arrested while stealing firearms from the Command’s armoury, has committed suicide in detention.

The State Commissioner of Police, Umar Shehu Ambursa, who confirmed the incident, said Audu killed himself early yesterday morning in detention and promised to give details later.

Audu, according to sources, shot himself in the chest while under the custody of the police command around 5am in Kaduna, North-West Nigeria.

While parading Audu and two others last Monday at the State Commands Headquarters in Kaduna, CP Ambursa had said that on October 20, 2014 at about 2230hours, Audu came to the armoury with two other persons in a private vehicle, parked behind the armoury and loaded some firearms into the vehicles. He said policemen on guard suspected foul play and immediately stopped the vehicle from leaving the premises.

According to the CP, “Upon interrogation, the State Armament Officer could not give satisfactory account of his action, which led to his arrest and the two other occupants of the vehicle, one Zingkur Joseph of Trade Centre Jos and Samuel Adamu of Kuru Jos-South Local Government Area of Plateau State, respectively.

“During search at the spot, 11 G3 Rifles already concealed under the vehicle seat were recovered.”

Ambursa added that further investigation revealed that one of the two civilian suspects is a blacksmith who specialises in manufacturing firearms.

“The two suspects came from Jos, Plateau State, on arrangement to purchase the said firearms from the Armament Officer at the cost of N400,000,” the CP said.

He listed other exhibits recovered from the trio to include N400,000 cash and a yellow Mercedes Benz 230-E with registration number LGT 588 RJ used in concealing the arms.
