The management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE), Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, has suspended all remaining Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week activities following reports of a security incident on the campus.

The university announced the suspension in a statement signed by its Registrar, Dr Chinonye Abraham Ajie, directing students to return to classes on Thursday, August 13, 2026, for normal academic activities.

The development followed reports that a male 100-level student of the Faculty of Education was allegedly shot during an incident on campus.

However, neither the university management nor the Rivers State Police Command had confirmed the reported shooting or the condition of the student as of the time of filing this report.

An eyewitness claimed that the incident occurred at the Faculty of Education and that the student was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The witness further alleged that the hospital was demanding N300,000 before surgery could be conducted, adding that the student’s course mates were contributing funds to meet the cost.

The witness also claimed that intelligence available to students had earlier indicated that two cult groups on campus had declared war against each other, with directives allegedly issued to their members across the institution.

The witness criticised the university’s handling of an earlier security incident on campus, describing its response as an embarrassment to the institution.

In its statement, the university management announced the immediate suspension of all remaining SUG Week activities.

The statement read:

“This is to inform the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Community that all remaining activities for the Students’ Union Government (SUG) Week have been suspended by the University Management with immediate effect. Students are therefore advised to return to classes on Thursday August 13th, 2026 for normal academic activities. Any student who fails to attend lectures will be held responsible for their actions. Students are also strongly warned to desist from any action that is inimical to their academic pursuit and the peace of the University.”

The management did not state in the announcement what prompted the suspension of the SUG Week activities.

As of press time, the Rivers State Police Command had also not issued a statement on the reported incident. (Channels TV)
