At least 300 Boko Haram insurgents from Nigeria have been arrested in Cameroon, the country’s Army announced yesterday. Also arrested was the Mayor of Fotokol, Ramat Moussa, described as a Boko Haram accomplice.
“The army said that huge stocks of weapons being used by insurgents in their attacks were found in the mayor’s residence, including those made by China,” reports Nigerian Pilot quoting an Agency report.
A source in Maroua, Cameroon, was quoted as saying that some of the heavy weapons found at the residence of Mayor Moussa included machine guns and rockets.
Before his arrest, Moussa was a notable member of the ruling Cameroun Peoples Democratic Movement with access to the country’s military intelligence information, the report says.
It discloses that Cameroon’s secret service has released from detention one Hans De Marie Heungoup, a reporter with the International Crisis Group who was arrested following wrong intelligence from Mayor Moussa that he was a Boko Haram agent.
News Express reports that the tide has recently turned against Boko Haram, with an increasing number of its fighters either captured or surrendering to the Nigerian military while many have been killed, including the leader, Abubakar Shekau.
