The ABU/ABUTH Joint Committee on Ebola Viral Disease has dismissed reports that there was a case of Ebola involving a student of Ahmadu Bello University at the University Teaching Hospital in Shika.

“The Committee, therefore, wishes to categorically state that there is indeed a reported case of a student of the University who had on Monday, September 1, 2014 took himself to the ABUTH Shika to complain of fever, body pain, diarrhea and vomiting; and he had been on and off with the sickness even two weeks before,” according to a statement issued this afternoon in Zaria.

The statement added: “From the examination carried out on the patient it was found that all the symptoms discovered are commonly seen in patients with other medical conditions. And again, he had no any history of travel to Ebola-infected places or contact with somebody with Ebola disease. But because of the high suspicion index about Ebola by our medical personnel which is expected during an epidemic or suspicion of an epidemic, any case with such presentation is suspected until proven otherwise. And that is why this case is being closely examined and investigated. Furthermore, the patient’s blood sample had already been taken in order to rule out any Ebola Viral Disease (EVD). It is the tradition of the hospital that any case of fever reported to the hospital since the outbreak of the pandemic disease, we try to investigate further.

“As it is now, we cannot confirm ANY CASE of Ebola Viral Disease in ABU and ABUTH.”
