APGA National Chairman Victor Umeh dodges Ebola test at airport

Efforts by the Nigerian Government to contain the spread of the deadly Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) may be defeated by the failure of some prominent Nigerians to submit themselves to the Ebola test and the failure by relevant health workers to insist on everyone taking the test irrespective of status.

News Express witnessed one of such potentially counter-productive failures this afternoon when the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Victor Umeh, and his entourage refused to take the test.

Umeh, who arrived the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, with an Arik Air flight from Abuja, was supposed to take the test at about 3:30 p.m. However, as other passengers patiently queued for the Ebola test at the entrance of the arrival hall, Chief Umeh briskly walked past the health official who was conducting the test on passengers.

As the APGA National Chairman swaggered past the back of the health official, his entourage followed him despite the protests of an elderly female supervisor and people on the two queues.

Ebola, which was brought into the country by late Liberian-American Patrick Sawyer, on July 24, 2014 (he died the next day in a Lagos hospital) has forced President Goodluck Jonathan to declare a medical emergency in the country.

Apart from Mr. Sawyer, Nigeria has recorded four other deaths, with the number of confirmed cases of Ebola in the country currently standing at 13, according to Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu.
