The senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Ebonyi South, Prince Onu Nweze, has accused Governor David Umahi of leading thugs to his residence, when they battered and attempted to kill him; at Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of the state.

The governor has since denied the allegation, saying that Nweze should not drag him into his woes; rather, he should be brave to tell the world what actually happened to him.

Nweze, who hails from the same community, Uburu, as Umahi, told newsmen in Enugu, yesterday, that the governor, with a retinue of aides, truck load of soldiers, police and thugs allegedly swooped on his compound at about 2:30pm, last Saturday, after the Independent National Electoral Commission had announced announcement postponement of the presidential and National Assembly elections, and almost killed him with his nephews present in the house.

He said that it took the intervention of the Commissioner of Police, Awotinde Awosola, who rushed from Abakaliki to Obiozara; to rescue him from Umahi and ensured he was taken to a hospital for treatment, particularly on his eyes, after which he was moved to Abakaliki police headquarters where he made a statement.

But, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Emmanuel Uzor, said the assassination claim was tissue of lies aimed at gaining “cheap popularity.

“How can he say that the governor led thugs to attack him? The governor cannot descend to that level. Who is he in the first place?

“The governor is not a candidate in the senatorial election and has neither problem with him nor any other person.”

However, the State Commissioner of Police confirmed that Nweze was attacked by the governor’s convoy but denied the incident was an assassination attempt.
