Three more political parties have been deregistered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This brings to 31 the number of parties now wiped off the books by INEC, which last week Thursday, Dec. 13, wielded the big axe on 28 parties.
The latest victims of INEC’s big axe, as announced this afternoon by the commission inAbuja, capital of Nigeria, are African Renaissance Party (ARP), National Democratic Party (NDP) and National Transformation Party (NTP).
Announcing the proscription of the three parties, INEC said that contrary to constitutional requirements, the affected parties have no national executive, no verifiable national headquarters, and had failed to win election at any level
News Express recalls that similar reasons were given for the deregistration of the first set of 28 parties, some of which have gone to court to challenge INEC over the issue.
INEC has, however, stuck to its guns, with the Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, vowing to deregister more political parties before the 2015 general elections while also registering new political parties that meet the requirements for registration.
