The lid has been lifted on the reason for the abrupt cancellation, at the last minute, of the scheduled visit of President Goodluck Jonathan visit to Chibok, Borno State, where Boko Haram terrorists on April 14 abducted more than 200 teenagers from Government Girls Secondary School.
The visit, according to the 3pm news bulletin of the federal government-owned Metro FM, Lagos (part of teh Radio Nigeria family), said the visit was put off “due to security reasons.” The station did not elaborate.
A presidential official had told AFP early afternoon: “The president has cancelled his visit to Chibok. It was on his schedule up until this morning.” The official did not give any reason for the abrupt cancellation of the visit.
Jonathan, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of Nigeria’s Armed Forces, has been under fire for refusing to visit Chibok to commiserate with the affected families. Before the visit was put off, he was scheduled to leave from Chibok to a security summit in Paris on Saturday to discuss the Boko Haram threat to regional stability.
