In a classical display of misplacement of priorities, a council chairman in Lagos, South-West Nigeria, spent N200 million to buy vehicles while the council area lacked basic amenities.
The case of Benjamin Olabinjo, Chairman of Ojokoro Local Council Development Area (LCDA), sparked outrage when he appeared before the Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs.
Olabinjo further annoyed the lawmakers when he blamed the lack of infrastructural development in the area on inadequate funding, lamenting the low Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).
Frowning at the council boss action, a member of the committee, Ipoola Omisore, who is representing Ifako/Ijaiye Constituency 2 under which LCDA falls, complained that the council chairman had not met the expectations of the people in his second term of office despite the fact that the council was financially buoyant.
“During your first term, you tried. Currently, you have not done enough to make the people clap or commend you,” Daily Independent quotes Omisore as saying, adding that the council area was witnessing serious infrastructural decay requiring urgent attention, but that the chairman rather focused his attention on less important areas.
After being tongue-lashed, the shamed Olabinjo was forced agree that the amount spent on the purchase of vehicles was high.
