Fire for fire as gunmen attack churches in Jos

What would have been another bloody attack was Sunday averted by security men in Jos, the Plateau State capital, when over 100 gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, shot sporadically at worshippers in churches at Rantya Low Cost.

The gunmen however met their match in soldiers deployed in the area, who repelled the attackers.

A security man with one of the churches told journalists that the incident occurred at about 10am when most of the churches were just about to commence services.

He said the gunmen who descended from the hills attacked the community as they shot at the worshippers but they were swiftly repelled by men of the Special Task Force (STF).

The incident however created tension in the community as the churches hurriedly rounded off their services to allow the congregations go home.

Country Coordinator of APURIMAC Onlus, a non-governmental organisation in Jos, Mr. Godwin Okoko, whose office is located in the community, confirmed the attack, saying that no life was however lost.

He praised the security personnel for repelling the attackers.

Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, Felicia Aslem, also confirmed the incident, but said she was yet to get the details.

The spokesman of the STF, Captain Salisu Mustapha, could not be reached as his phone was switched off.
