Several gunshots were heard at the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rumuolumeni, near Port Harcourt, Rivers State on Tuesday, as students scampered for safety.

Sources within the campus told newsmen that the incident occurred during the institution’s Jean Carnival, when members of the rival KK klans and Vikings confraternities engaged each other in confrontation over the control of the campus.

The incident has renewed concerns over cult-related violence in educational institutions and the need for stronger measures to protect students and staff.

Though no life was lost during the shootings, sources within the campus said the latest clash marked a shift from the frequent confrontations between suspected Vikings and Black Axe members in the institution to a rivalry between the Vikings and KKK groups.

It was gathered that both groups allegedly brought in “foreign” members, (cult members from outside the university), ahead of the clash.

It was gathered that the confrontation may have been linked to a struggle for territorial control, with the rival groups allegedly seeking to establish dominance within the university environment.

The latest incident is coming amid reports of recurring cult-related clashes on the university campus over the past two years.

One of the notable incidents occurred on August 12, 2024, when suspected members of the Black Axe and Vikings cult groups reportedly clashed on the campus, leaving a student in a coma.

Police spokesperson in Rivers State, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, who confirmed the incident, said the situation has been under control, while investigation is ongoing.

She said, “Regarding this incident, it was a clash between two cult groups. The Police responded promptly and arrived at the scene in good time, successfully bringing the situation under control.

“No shots were fired by the Police, as the officers only took proportionate measures necessary to contain and arrest the situation. No lives were lost. However, members of the groups fled the scene, while investigation is ongoing to identify and apprehend those involved.” (Daily Trust)
