He made the call during a visit to the Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu General Hospital, Awka, where he sympathised with the students of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, who were recently involved in an auto crash.
It was gathered that the crash which took place in Awgbu community in Orumba North Local Government Area of the state recently claimed the lives of three students of the Polytechnic including the driver while eleven others sustained various degrees of injury.
Ezeemo, who is also the leader of Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) in the state, encouraged the victims to remain strong even as he donated N100,000 to supplement their upkeep.
He called on other well meaning individuals in the state to help the victims with assistance for quick recovery.
The industrialist further condemned the indiscriminate issuance of drivers’ license to untrained drivers by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and other authorities.
He attributed the ceaseless road crashes on the road to indiscriminate issuance of drivers license to the public without subjecting people especially commercial drivers to tests on traffic laws and driving codes adding that the use of drivers’ licence as a means of identification should be stopped.
He observed that because the license was being used as a sort of identification for many transactions, people who ordinarily would not have business with the license get it and with that jump at any opportunity they have to drive causing avoidable road crashes in the process.
Speaking on the auto crash, the President of the Student Union Government of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Mr. Nwachukwu Okechukwu, said that the crash had taken a toll on the institution as all the 14 passengers were their students who travelled home for the weekend and were returning back to school when the accident occurred.
Mr. Obini Onuchukwu, Public Relations Officer of the institution, said that as soon as the news of the accident filtered into the school, the Directorate of Student Affairs, Security Unit, Medical Unit and Student Union Government rushed to the scene to help the injured who were immediately rushed to the hospitals.
He said that the school was deeply pained over the loss and are doing everything possible to ensure that the surviving ones get assistance.
