Death toll confirmed in suicide bomb attack on Catholic Church in northern Nigeria

Three people have been confirmed dead in this morning’s suicide bomb attack on St. John’s Catholic Cathedral in Bauchi, North East of Nigeria.

At least 28 people were injured in the attack, according to the North East Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) responsible for Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.

Unofficial sources however put the death toll at six and the injured about 50. The attack was launched by a lone driver who rammed his Opel Vectra car into the gates of the church.

“A bomb has exploded at directly across the Township Stadium killing several Christian worshippers,” NEMA North East confirmed via Facebook.

“The explosion reportedly occurred a few minutes after 9:00 a.m. Nigerian time during Sunday church service on Murtala Mohammed Way in the Bayan Gari area of the township,” the agency added.

News Express learnt that NEMA response team and other stakeholders have evacuated the injured to Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital.

It is not yet clear who launched the attack but fingers are pointing in the direction of Boko Haram, the terrorist Islamic group noted for such attacks.
