Chelseas Levi Colwill fouls Sunderlands Brian Brobbey to concede a penalty Reuters
Sunderland ended their seven-game winless run in the Premier League as Enzo Le Fee’s penalty clinched a 1-0 victory over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats looked determined to make amends for their 2-0 loss to Dinamo Zagreb in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday, when they were booed off the pitch by their own fans.
Brian Brobbey was particularly lively and drew the foul from Levi Colwill that enabled Le Fee to score his fourth spot-kick of the season in the 36th minute.
The Blues improved in the second half but were unable to break down Regis Le Bris’ side, resulting in another frustrating defeat.
How the match unfolded
Sunderland lost Granit Xhaka to injury early on but were on top for from the off, although Brobbey was unable to find the target after shaking off Colwill in the 15th minute.
Cole Palmer had a penalty appeal turned down for Chelsea and Morgan Rogers sent a header wide before Brobbey powered past Colwill and Wesley Fofana only to fire wide from a tight angle.
Sunderland got the goal their first-half display deserved when Le Fee whipped a penalty into the bottom-left corner after Colwill was booked for tripping Brobbey.
Alonso replaced Colwill with Estevao for the second half, with Moises Caicedo moving into the centre of defence.
Chelsea enjoyed more of the possession but they struggled to find a way through Sunderland’s stoic defence.
Thomas Meunier made an important last-ditch tackle to stop Estevao from testing goalkeeper Robin Roefs following Rogers’ through-ball just after the hour mark, while Chelsea substitute Danny Welbeck nodded their first attempt of the second half off target in the 65th minute.
Sunderland’s nearly doubled their lead when Caicedo and Fofana’s miscommunication put Wilson Isidor through one-on-one with Mike Penders, but Chelsea’s goalkeeper came out on top.
Geovany Quenda replaced Pep Chavarria for the final stages for Chelsea and saw a low, cross-cum-shot deflect wide off Meunier, while Welbeck guided a header just over in stoppage time as the Blues continued to come up short in front of goal.
Chelsea consequently dropped to fifth while Sunderland move off the foot of the table and up to 18th ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Aston Villa. (premierleague.com)
