A cross-section of participants at the physical phase of the 2026 National Youth Conference
By FRANCA OFILI
Participants at the physical phase of the 2026 National Youth Conference have called for increased youth representation in governance, women’s inclusion and implementation of resolutions reached at the conference.
They made the call in an interview with the (NAN) while expressing expectations from the conference.
They emphasised the need for practical recommendations that would address challenges facing young Nigerians and strengthen their participation in national development.
Ms Longe Olasubomi, representing the South-South, said young people should be given greater opportunities to participate in political leadership and decision-making processes.
She advocated 30 per cent representation for youths in politics and governance, noting that increased participation would provide opportunities for young Nigerians to contribute to decisions affecting their future.
Similarly, Ms Morrine Emizibo, also representing the South-South, called for greater inclusion of women in politics, urging stakeholders to create an enabling environment for women to contest elections and occupy leadership positions.
“The men need to support their women, particularly husbands, for women interested in political participation, such support could encourage more women to seek elective offices,” she said.
Mr Kehinde Oyinlola, representing the South-West, said he expects that recommendations from the conference would be implemented, adding that the success of the gathering should be measured by the actions taken after its conclusion.
He also called for measures to remove financial barriers preventing young people from participating in political processes, including making relevant nomination forms accessible and affordable.
Mr Uchechukwu Okolo, representing the South-East, called for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in governance and decision-making, adding that they should have equal opportunities to contribute to national development.
He said Inclusive governance should accommodate people from different backgrounds and abilities, ensuring that no group was excluded from decisions affecting the country.
Also, Mr Gambo Abdullahi, representing the North-West, urged political leaders to discourage the exploitation of young people during elections.
He called for responsible political participation and an end to using youths as instruments of electoral violence.
“We need young Nigerians to become active participants in democratic processes rather than being mobilised merely to advance the interests of political actors,” he advised.
The participants also said they expect that the conference would strengthen youth leadership, promote national unity and provide a platform for young Nigerians to contribute ideas towards addressing unemployment, insecurity, education and economic challenges.
They urged relevant government institutions and stakeholders to sustain engagement with young people beyond the conference and ensure that recommendations are translated into measurable programmes and policies. (NAN)
