PAMO University of Medical Sciences, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has joined the Oxonia University Network, an international alliance of universities promoting academic cooperation, research and innovation.
The university announced its admission in a statement following a high-level programme on Leadership and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Higher Education held at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
Established in 2013, the network has grown from 16 institutions in 14 countries to more than 153 universities across 41 countries.
It promotes international academic cooperation, entrepreneurship and the application of research to address societal challenges.
The statement said PAMO’s admission would strengthen the network’s presence in Africa and Asia, while bringing its expertise in medical education, healthcare research and health sciences training to the alliance.
The event also witnessed a leadership change, with the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, taking over as president of the network from Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
In his inaugural address, Ribadu outlined his vision for the network’s next decade, with emphasis on integrating artificial intelligence into university teaching, administration and medical research.
He said the admission of specialised institutions such as PAMO demonstrated the importance of international academic cooperation.
“As global higher education navigates technological advancements and emerging healthcare challenges, strengthening our network’s research capabilities and responsible AI adoption remains paramount,” he said.
The discussions also focused on the use of digital platforms to promote joint research, staff exchanges and the development of policies for the responsible use of AI across member institutions.
The network brings together universities from 41 countries, including Nigeria, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Brazil, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. (Daily Trust)
