A politically inclined Islamic group, in Oyo State, Political Awareness Group (PAG), has called on its members to remain informed, peaceful, united and purposeful, as the 2027 general elections draw nearer.
Immediate past chairman of the group, Dr Lukman Fasasi, gave the charge while delivering his address during the 3rd Triennial Conference with the theme: ‘Muslims in the 2027 General Elections: Our Eggs and Baskets’ organised by the group at the University of Ibadan Central mosque recently.
Dr Fasasi, told members to educate, mobilise and empower the people while engaging constructively with all stakeholders. He urged them to pursue justice, equity, competence, character, good governance and responsible leadership for the benefit of all the people of Oyo State.
He said:”Our vision must extend beyond one election. We must build an organisation capable of influencing political awareness today and preparing future generations for responsible leadership tomorrow,” he said.
He stated further that even though PAG is not a political party. It should remain an independent platform for political education, issue-based advocacy and constructive engagement with governments, political parties and political actors.
Dr Fasasi, also noted that the responsibility of the group is to educate the people about their civic rights and responsibilities, encourage peaceful participation, discourage vote buying and electoral malpractice, and promote candidates and policies based on competence, character, integrity, capacity and commitment to good governance.
He said PAG should continue to articulate the legitimate political aspiration of Muslims, including the aspiration that a competent and responsible Muslim should have the opportunity to lead Oyo State.
“Faith and competence are not mutually exclusive. We must preserve the unity of the Ummah. Our differences in political affiliation, orientation and background are natural, but they must never become greater than the interests that unite us. As Allah says: “And hold firmly, all together, to the rope of Allah and do not be divided.” (Qur’an 3:103),” he stated. (Tribune)
