The country music star died in his sleep on Wednesday, Oct. 21, according to his obituary
John Anderson, a Country Music Hall of Famer who scored hits in the 1980s and 1990s, has died. He was 71.
Anderson died "peacefully in his sleep" on Wednesday, Oct. 21, according to his obituary.
"It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and best friend," his family said in a statement. "To the world, he was a gifted country music singer whose voice and songs touched countless lives. To us, he was so much more."
Anderson was "the heart of our family, the one who made us laugh, loved us fiercely, and made every ordinary moment feel special," the statement continued.

"We are completely heartbroken," the statement continued. "His music will live on, but for us, his greatest legacy will always be the love he gave his family and the memories we will carry with us forever. Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers as we grieve this unimaginable loss."Tim McGraw, who was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame on Sunday, Oct. 18, paid tribute to Anderson in an Instagram post.

"I was talking with John Sunday night at the HOF ceremony," he began the caption, accompanied by a photo of him and Anderson backstage at the event. "He was in such good spirits. We talked, we laughed, we sang his songs that I loved so much together, just goofing off."
"I am completely heartbroken by his passing," McGraw, 59, added. "There will never be a stylist in music, any music, that was so defining as his. It's just devastating. All of our love goes out to his family and the country music community. He was and is one of the defining voices in country music. So great. I am completely shook."
Raised in Apopka, Fla., Anderson first made a name for himself in Nashville when he signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1976, according to his Country Music Hall of Fame bio. By the early 1980s, the neotraditional country artist was invited to open for country legends Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson, and became known for his unique blend of country and folk music and introspective, yet occasionally humorous, lyrics.
In 1983, he won both the CMA Horizon Award and Single of the Year for his million-selling single "Swingin.'" He cemented himself as a mainstay in country music with 1990s hits "Straight Tequila Night" and "Seminole Wind."
Anderson received the Academy of Country Music Career Achievement Award in 1993 and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014. In 2024, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame alongside Toby Keith and James Burton.
"This is an institution that preserves greatness," Anderson said at the time of his induction. "That I get the chance to be amongst this kind of greatness, words can't explain."
Anderson is survived by his wife Jamie, daughters Alexa and Brionna and their families. (People)
