Senator George Akume, and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia
A group under the aegis of National Intelligence Watch has urged security agencies to investigate allegations of a plot to recruit foreign fighters from Cameroon, Chad and Niger to destabilise Benue State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group warned that, if substantiated, the alleged plan could worsen insecurity, endanger residents and undermine the credibility of the forthcoming elections.
In a statement signed by its chairman, Chief Matthew Apine, the organisation expressed concern over claims that armed groups from the three neighbouring countries could be recruited to foment violence in the state.
The alarm comes amid lingering political disagreements between the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia.
National Intelligence Watch called on security agencies to establish the facts surrounding the allegations, identify anyone implicated in plans to sponsor violence, and ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
It also expressed concern over claims that criminal activities could be exploited to discredit the state government and influence the outcome of the 2027 governorship election.
The organisation urged political leaders to resolve their differences through lawful democratic processes, warning against actions capable of aggravating insecurity or threatening public peace.
It called for increased security vigilance in vulnerable communities, particularly areas where political rivalry and existing security challenges could heighten tensions ahead of the elections.
The group also appealed to residents to report credible intelligence about potential threats to the appropriate authorities while cautioning against the circulation of unverified information capable of triggering panic or deepening political divisions.
It stressed that security agencies must remain professional and impartial, warning against the use of state institutions to settle political scores or intimidate opponents.
The organisation further urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant institutions to collaborate with security agencies to ensure that the 2027 elections are conducted in a peaceful, transparent and credible atmosphere.
According to the group, no political ambition should supersede the protection of lives and property, adding that any verified attempt to introduce foreign fighters into domestic political violence would demand urgent and decisive intervention.
It appealed to all sides in the political dispute to exercise restraint and avoid statements or actions that could escalate tensions in the state.
The group further stated that safeguarding public safety, protecting democratic institutions and ensuring that residents can participate freely in the electoral process without fear or intimidation should remain the overriding priorities. (Independent)
