World football governing body FIFA and the Saudi Esports Federation postponed the FIFAe Finals 2026 on Thursday, originally scheduled to take place in Jeddah on Oct. 16-25, in light of recent attacks on Saudi soil.
The decision followed an assessment of recent Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and their impact on the logistical arrangements required to stage the tournament, FIFA said in a statement.
FIFA thanked Saudi Arabia and the Saudi Esports Federation for their support and cooperation in preparations for the event, noting the country's previous hosting of the tournament.
FIFA said further details on the rescheduled FIFAe Finals would be announced in due course.
Earlier this week, the Saudi football league postponed three Matchweek 9 fixtures, including Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr match against Al Ahli.
Houthi attacks on Riyadh’s main airport over the weekend killed 14 people and wounded more than 300 others. Houthi attacks have also been reported on other airports, and on energy facilities.
The Houthis seized Yemen’s capital Sanaa in 2014, and a Saudi-led coalition had been fighting them since 2015 until a ceasefire was agreed in 2022. That ceasefire broke down this July. (AA)
