Five people have been seriously injured after a 40-foot HOWO truck rammed into two commercial buses at Berger Bus Stop, inward Kara Bridge, in Lagos State.
The accident occurred shortly after 1 p.m. when the truck, reportedly travelling from Lagos towards Kara Bridge, crashed into the buses parked by the roadside.
An official of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) at the scene said the truck suffered brake failure before hitting the two buses.
“He was coming from Lagos, here, and he had a brake failure there. So, he now hit these two cars. I think there’s no casualty anyway, but they were wounded, so they’ve taken them to emergency,” the official said.
However, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) later confirmed that five passengers, comprising three women and two men, including the driver, sustained serious injuries in the crash.
In a statement on Tuesday, LASTMA said its operatives rescued the injured passengers and facilitated their evacuation to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Centre at Toll Gate for medical attention. Personnel from Isheri Police Station also provided security support at the scene.
The agency said the crash caused significant traffic congestion, with queues stretching back to Otedola Bridge.
LASTMA operatives subsequently removed the vehicles, including the truck, from the carriageway to prevent secondary accidents and restore traffic flow.
The vehicles were later handed over to the police for investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The agency’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy with the injured passengers and wished them a speedy recovery.
He urged motorists, particularly operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy, maintain them regularly and comply with road safety regulations.
LASTMA reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring smooth traffic movement across Lagos State. (Channels TV)
