The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced plans to establish a Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, enabling Nigerians in Canada and across North America to sit the examination from 2027.
JAMB disclosed this in a post on its official social media platforms after its Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, visited the Nigerian High Commission in Ottawa.
The board said the proposed centre would make it easier for eligible Nigerians in Canada and across North America, particularly those seeking admission to Nigerian tertiary institutions, to take the UTME without travelling to Nigeria.
“The proposed centre will make it easier for Nigerians in the diaspora to sit for the UTME without travelling to Nigeria solely for the examination,” JAMB said.
According to the board, the initiative is part of its efforts to “take Nigerian tertiary education to the world” and to strengthen the connection between Nigerians abroad and the country’s education system.
JAMB said the centre would also create opportunities to promote Nigerian tertiary education internationally and reduce barriers faced by Nigerians in the diaspora seeking admission to institutions in Nigeria.
“For Nigerians in Canada, the UTME is coming closer to home,” the board said.
The examination body added that it was “working towards establishing a UTME examination centre in Ottawa, Canada, expected to commence operations in 2027.”
JAMB described the proposed centre as an opportunity to strengthen the relationship between Nigerians in the diaspora and Nigerian tertiary education.
It said the Initiative would give eligible candidates across North America greater access to the UTME and make it easier for them to pursue tertiary education in Nigeria. (The Nation)
