Tension erupted at the Transformer Road, Agudama-Epie axis of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital on Sunday evening as suspected cultists shot a young man to death and injured another woman in the area.
Though the identity of the cult gang is yet to be identified, residents of the area told Daily Trust that the perpetrators are either members of the bobos cult or greenlanders.
Rival cult groups clash has been going on in Yenagoa for several months, but the rate of attacks was reduced recently until Monday.
They said the killer cultists were looking for some rival members who were said to be hiding in the area.
A resident, who witnessed the clash, told Daily Trust that the rival groups had engaged each other in a fight with dangerous weapons, which led to the killing of one man, who was allegedly brought down during the clash, as residents scampered for safety.
The identity of the victim and the details surrounding the incident are yet to be officially confirmed.
It was not ascertained what triggered the renewed cult clash in the area, but residents said it could be a fight for supremacy.
Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, DSP Musa Mohammed, who confirmed the clash and the killing, said the Commissioner of Police had already deployed more operatives to the area to clampdown on all criminal activities in the state.
He said while law and order had been fully restored in the area, investigation was ongoing to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to book. (Daily Trust)
