The Kano State Police Command has invited Hon. Aminu Abdullahi Warkal for questioning over the alleged unlawful display of a firearm during what appeared to be a political gathering.
The command said it came across a video clip circulating on social media during a routine cyber patrol, in which Warkal was allegedly seen openly displaying a firearm suspected to be a pump-action rifle.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the command said the alleged act, if established, could constitute a violation of the provisions of the Firearms Act.
According to the statement, the display of the weapon could also incite fear, intimidate members of the public and threaten public peace and security.
It said the invitation was made on the directive of the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, adding that Warkal was currently at the State Intelligence Department (SID) of the command headquarters in Bompai, Kano, where investigation was ongoing.
“The Commissioner of Police strongly warns that the Command will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of the status of the person involved,” the statement said.
The police commissioner further urged political gladiators, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct themselves peacefully and to comply with the Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other relevant laws.
He stressed that all political activities should be conducted in a manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and to maintaining peace in Kano State before, during and after the political season. (Nigerian Tribune)
