Amotekun Commander, High Chief Adekunle Isaac Omoyele
The Osun State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has denied reports that its operatives were arrested by the police over the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, popularly known as Emir Ajagungbade, and recent attacks in Ile-Ife.
Reports circulating on social media had alleged that five Amotekun operatives were arrested in connection with the murder of Oyeyemi, a political associate of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who was shot dead on September 13 at Mayfair Park in Ile-Ife shortly after a peace meeting of Accord Party members.
Reacting in a statement on Monday, the Corps Commander, High Chief Adekunle Isaac Omoyele, said the report was misleading.
The Corps, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, CSA Yusuf Idowu Abass, said no arrest was made, but that the Commander voluntarily handed over four operatives attached to NURTW chieftain, Alowonle Nurudeen, to the Osun State Police Command to assist investigation.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Police did not arrest the Amotekun operatives in question. Rather, the Corps Commander of the Osun State Amotekun Corps, in the interest of transparency, accountability and a thorough investigation, personally handed over four operatives attached to NURTW chieftain Alowonle Nurudeen to the Osun State Police Command,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the decision was taken to enable the police to conduct their investigation and unravel the circumstances surrounding the attacks in Ile-Ife.
“The operatives were therefore made available to the appropriate security authority as part of the investigative process,” the statement further reads.
Amotekun said the public should distinguish between being arrested and being voluntarily handed over for investigation, warning against sensationalising the matter before conclusion of police investigation.
“The Corps further urges the public to allow the police investigation to run its full course and refrain from reaching premature conclusions or passing judgment on the operatives involved,” Abass added.
The Corps said it remains committed to professionalism and cooperation with other security agencies.
The Osun State Police Command had earlier confirmed arrests in connection with Oyeyemi’s death, including an associate of Alowonle, Waliyi Adejare alias Jay Jay, arrested at Oke Baale, Osogbo, while investigation continues at the State Criminal Investigation Department. (The Sun)
