Vice Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi
Vice Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has said he is waiting for anyone who can prove that he is corrupt.
Amaechi stated this during an interview on Channels Television on Friday while responding to questions about his service in the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The former minister, who was a strong ally of Buhari and served with him for eight years, questioned the duration of his service when asked about the issue of corruption under the former administration.
Responding to the suggestion that there was widespread corruption under Buhari, Amaechi said the situation was different from what he described as the current situation.
“No, that’s not… That’s not as bad as this. In fact, there’s no corruption here, they’re just taking the thing home. You know the difference? The difference is that when you’re corrupt, you hide it. These ones are not hiding it. It’s so glaring,” he said.
In his response to a subtle accusation of being part of the alleged corruption in Buhari’s government because he served in the administration, Amaechi denied involvement in corrupt practices.
“Have you asked yourself why they find it difficult to arrest me? And I’ve been in politics since 1987. 1987! And I’ve asked Nigerians—”
When asked whether this was because Amaechi was smart, Amaechi added, “Clap for me, Am I an accountant? I read English. I read literature. I’m not an accountant, I don’t know how to keep money. So, don’t say—”
“I’ve said it several times. One time Maupe was interviewing me and she asked, “Are you corrupt?” I said, “No.” And I’m waiting for the person that will prove that I was corrupt.” (Nigerian Tribune)
