The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Benin Branch, has commended the Edo State Special Criminal Court for the speedy handling of a kidnapping case, saying it demonstrated that justice could be delivered promptly without compromising due process.
The court on Monday sentenced four men — Marvelous Isaac, 32; Gift Raphael, 27; Wisdom Michael and Rufus Michael — to death after convicting them on charges including kidnapping, conspiracy, armed robbery, possession of firearms and cultism.
Reacting to the judgment, the NBA Benin Branch Chairman, Omorodion Omoigui, urged the judiciary to apply effective case management to other matters by reducing unnecessary adjournments and ensuring that court processes are filed and served promptly.
He said the call was not for justice to be rushed, but for it to be delivered efficiently, fairly and without avoidable delays.
Omoigui said the speedy determination of the case showed that criminal matters could be concluded within a reasonable time while protecting the constitutional right of accused persons to a fair hearing.
He added that while the prosecution presented its case clearly, the defence counsel diligently protected the rights of the accused persons. (Daily Trust)
