Christine Lagarde
European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has left open the possibility of leaving her position before the end of her scheduled term in October 2027.
Speaking to Ireland’s national broadcaster RTE on Friday, Lagarde was asked about persistent reports that she could resign before her mandate expires.
“I am leaving in 2027,” Lagarde said, responding to questions about her future at the ECB.
However, when asked whether she meant October 2027, the end of her current mandate, she replied, “We’ll see.”
Lagarde also said any decision concerning the timing of her departure would be handled professionally.
“What I can say at this stage is that, regardless of the timing, the matter will be handled in the most professional manner possible, as it should be,” she said.
Speculation over Lagarde’s future has continued for much of the year, with attention also turning to potential candidates to succeed her as ECB president.
Reuters reported that France would support Dutch central banker Klaas Knot as Lagarde’s successor under a potential arrangement that would see a French candidate appointed as the ECB’s chief economist.
Lagarde’s current eight-year term as ECB president is scheduled to end in October 2027. (Arise News)
