Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed
By BONIFACE AKARAH
The Peter Obi Media Office (POMR) has said former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi can lead efforts to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges, citing his record as governor of Anambra State.
POMR made the position in a statement on Monday by its spokesman, Idris Zekeri Jnr, in response to recent comments by former Labour Party vice-presidential candidate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed that no single individual, including Obi, could rescue Nigeria.
Zekeri said Datti-Baba Ahmed’s position was understandable given the scale of Nigeria’s challenges but argued that it did not reflect what he described as Obi’s demonstrated capacity in public office.
“Peter Obi does not approach Nigeria’s challenges as an experiment,” Zekeri said.
According to him, Obi’s record in Anambra provided evidence of his ability to manage limited public resources while prioritising areas such as education, healthcare, human development and infrastructure.
“He demonstrated fiscal discipline, prioritised education, healthcare, and human development, invested in critical infrastructure, reduced waste, and left behind a record that continues to be examined and debated long after he left office,” he said.
The POMR spokesman acknowledged that no individual could single-handedly solve all of Nigeria’s problems.
“The question is whether Nigeria can elect a leader with the character, competence, prudence, and courage to begin the rescue,” he said.
Zekeri said Obi would need to work with other Nigerians by building strong institutions, appointing competent people, confronting corruption, reducing waste and investing in production.
“He will not do it alone,” he said. “He will do it by building strong institutions, assembling competent Nigerians, confronting corruption, cutting waste, investing in production, and restoring confidence in government.”
POMR said Nigeria needed leadership that understood public resources as a trust rather than an avenue for personal gain.
The statement concluded with the assertion that Obi could lead a national rescue based on his previous record, rather than on claims of being a “miracle worker.”
“So, yes, Nigeria can be rescued. And Peter Obi can lead that rescue — not because he claims to be a miracle worker, but because his record shows that he knows how to turn limited resources into measurable results,” Zekeri said.
