Three members of a local vigilante group have been killed after gunmen attacked a civilian guard post at the Gwa Rim community in Riyom Local Government Area (LGA) of Plateau State.

Our correspondent reports that many vigilantes lost their lives while trying to provide security assistance to their communities.

confirming the latest incident, residents said the attack occurred at about 2: am on Wednesday when the gunmen opened fire on the vigilantes who were keeping watch at the community guard post.

A member of the area, Damba Dang, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent, said the attackers struck when the community was asleep, killing three vigilantes.

Dang lamented the renewed attacks on communities in the area, saying residents were becoming increasingly worried over their safety.

He said the killing of the vigilantes was particularly disturbing because they were only providing security for their community and helping to protect residents against attacks.

He appealed to security agencies to urgently strengthen security around Gwa Rim and other vulnerable communities in Riyom to prevent further attacks.

Dang also urged security operatives to investigate the incident, track down the perpetrators and ensure that those responsible for the killings were brought to justice. (Daily Trust)
